Video Shows ICE Agents Breaking into Portland Home as Terrified Infant Cries During Arrest

Viral footage raises questions over ICE tactics and family trauma amid immigration crackdown

A distressing video from Portland, Oregon, has gone viral, showing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents breaking down the door of a family’s home, pointing guns at a mother holding her three-month-old baby, and forcibly arresting a male relative during a raid.

The footage, recorded by the mother inside a Gresham apartment, roughly 17 miles east of Portland, captures chaotic moments as armed officers storm the residence. The sound of a crying infant fills the background as agents shout commands for a male family member to surrender.

What the viral video shows

The short clip, now circulating widely on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, opens with ICE officers pounding on the door before forcing their way inside. As they enter the bedroom, a woman can be heard screaming, clutching her infant, while agents shout, “Police! Don’t move, hands up!”

Seconds later, the video shows officers restraining a man, believed to be a relative, and dragging him out of the room as the baby wails.
“This is unfair… they scared my baby,” the mother wrote in her Facebook post. “We are not criminals to be treated that way, let alone have guns pointed at us.”

The woman’s mother told The Independent that her daughter has been “traumatised” since the raid.

“Anything scares her now; she’s shaking all the time,” the grandmother said.

ICE defends operation as “lawful and targeted”

In a statement to reporters, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson said the raid was part of a targeted enforcement operation aimed at apprehending a “previously removed violent criminal illegal alien from Mexico.”

According to the official, the suspect, who remains at large, had fled from a vehicle stop earlier that day, ramming a U.S. Postal Service truck before escaping on foot into the apartment complex.
“After repeated refusals to come out, law enforcement entered the apartment,” the statement read. “The target escaped and remains at large. Two other Mexican nationals found inside were taken into ICE custody.”

ICE emphasized that “no injuries occurred” during the incident and that use of force protocols were followed, citing officer safety concerns.

Family denies wrongdoing, claims legal entry

The family, however, insists they are in the United States legally and had no involvement with the fugitive ICE was pursuing. The mother says the agents’ aggressive actions left her baby terrified and her family “treated like criminals.”

Civil rights advocates are now calling for an independent review of the incident, arguing that ICE’s tactics may have violated the family’s Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable searches and seizures.

“Even if ICE had a valid warrant, breaking into a home with guns drawn while a baby is present shows a disturbing disregard for proportional force,” said immigration attorney Laura Mendoza, who reviewed the video. “This is precisely why so many communities fear cooperation with federal enforcement.”

Broader debate on ICE’s use of force

The Portland video has reignited debate over ICE’s raids and deportation practices, particularly in family and mixed-status households. Critics say these operations too often result in collateral arrests, detaining individuals who were not the original targets.

The agency has faced growing scrutiny in recent years for conducting raids without judicial warrants, instead relying on administrative warrants signed internally by ICE officials. Advocates argue such raids erode community trust and expose families, including children, to unnecessary trauma.

A 2023 report by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) found that ICE’s home raids frequently involved “aggressive entry tactics,” with one in four operations resulting in children witnessing the arrest of a family member.

Public outcry and calls for an investigation

Since the video went viral, thousands of users have condemned the agents’ actions online, with hashtags such as #ICEraid and #PortlandVideo trending across platforms. Several members of Oregon’s congressional delegation have called for an inquiry into the circumstances of the raid.

State Representative Teresa Alonso Leon, a longtime advocate for immigrant rights, wrote on X,

“This video is heartbreaking. No baby should have to grow up associating law enforcement with fear and violence.”

Local immigrant support organizations in Portland have also mobilized, offering legal aid and counseling services to the affected family.

What happens next

The DHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) has not confirmed whether an internal review is underway. Legal experts say ICE could face litigation if the family’s claims of legal status and excessive force are substantiated.

Meanwhile, the fugitive described by ICE as a “violent criminal alien” remains at large, and federal authorities continue their search.

For now, the viral video stands as a stark reminder of the human cost of immigration enforcement, raising new questions about how far the U.S. government should go in pursuing suspects and what safeguards are needed to protect innocent families caught in the crossfire.

TL;DR (Summary)

  • What happened: ICE agents broke into a Portland-area home during a raid, pointing guns at a mother and her baby.
  • What the video shows: A terrified three-month-old crying as a male relative is dragged out.
  • ICE’s stance: Officials say they were pursuing a violent fugitive who fled into the home.
  • Family’s claim: They are legal residents and allege unnecessary use of force.
  • Why it matters: Sparks renewed debate over ICE’s home raid tactics and child trauma during enforcement actions.
