Jewels

A stunning theft in the heart of Paris

In one of the most audacious art crimes in recent history, eight priceless pieces of royal jewelry were stolen from the Louvre Museum in Paris on Sunday. The collection, which spans more than two centuries of French history, once belonged to queens and empresses and represents an irreplaceable part of France’s cultural heritage.

1. Jewels of queens and empresses

The stolen collection includes dazzling pieces once owned by France’s most illustrious royal women, Empress Eugénie, Queen Marie-Amélie, and Queen Hortense.

Among the items taken were Empress Eugénie’s tiara and crown, both crafted by celebrated 19th-century jeweler Alexandre-Gabriel Lemonnier shortly after her 1853 marriage to Napoleon III. The thieves reportedly fled with both but abandoned the crown while escaping.

“This tiara is the one she wore almost daily at court, and that can be seen in her official portraits. She valued it greatly,” said Pierre Branda, historian and scientific director of the Napoleon Foundation.

Also missing are a sapphire necklace and earring set that once adorned Queen Marie-Amélie, wife of King Louis-Philippe, and Queen Hortense, mother of Napoleon III. According to jewelry historian Vincent Meylan, the set was likely inherited from Empress Joséphine, Napoleon I’s first wife, and may even trace its origins to Queen Marie Antoinette.

“It really is a part of France’s history,” Meylan told AFP.

2. Masterpieces of craftsmanship

The collection represents the pinnacle of 19th-century jewelry design, breathtaking combinations of diamonds, pearls, sapphires, and emeralds crafted by France’s most renowned jewelers.

The so-called “reliquary” brooch of Empress Eugénie, made in 1855 by Paul-Alfred Bapst, is set with 94 diamonds, including a rosette of seven surrounding a heart-shaped central solitaire once owned by King Louis XIV.

Eugénie’s pearl tiara is studded with nearly 2,000 diamonds and more than 200 pearls, while Marie-Amélie’s sapphire necklace sparkles with eight deep-blue sapphires and 631 diamonds. The emerald necklace, gifted by Napoleon I to his second wife, Empress Marie-Louise, features 32 emeralds and 1,138 diamonds, according to the Louvre’s catalog.

“These are not just royal heirlooms; they are exceptional works of art,” said Didier Rykner, editor-in-chief of La Tribune de l’Art.

3. Recent additions to the Louvre’s collection

Though steeped in centuries of history, most of the stolen jewels had only recently entered the Louvre’s collection.

Of the eight stolen pieces, seven were acquired in the past 40 years. The emerald set joined the museum in 2004, with funding support from France’s Heritage Fund and the Society of Friends of the Louvre.

Marie-Amélie’s sapphire necklace was purchased in 1985, while Empress Eugénie’s tiara and corsage bow were added in 1992 and 2008, respectively.

Their presence in the museum was meant to make France’s royal heritage accessible to the public, a goal now jeopardized by the theft.

4. Invaluable — yet “unsellable”

While France’s Ministry of Culture described the jewels as having “priceless heritage value,” experts agree their monetary worth, though immense, cannot be precisely measured.

“They are invaluable in terms of heritage,” Rykner said. “However, their price can be assessed.”

Because the items are cataloged and widely documented, reselling them would be virtually impossible, Meylan explained. “The correct term is unsellable,” he said, noting that every piece is easily identifiable and publicly recorded.

5. The fear: dismantling France’s history

Experts now warn that the stolen jewels may be stripped for parts, with the diamonds, pearls, and gems removed and resold separately.

“If we don’t find these jewels very quickly, they will disappear for sure,” Meylan cautioned. “This is where treasure becomes priceless. We risk losing pieces of France’s history.”

The Louvre and French authorities have launched a full investigation, working with international law enforcement and Interpol to track down the missing treasures.

For now, France waits, hoping that these glittering fragments of its royal past can still be recovered intact.

TL;DR (Summary)

Eight priceless royal jewels, including Empress Eugénie’s tiara and Queen Marie-Amélie’s sapphire set, were stolen from the Louvre Museum in Paris. The pieces, spanning two centuries of French history, are deemed “unsellable” due to their unique documentation. Experts warn that unless recovered quickly, the jewels may be dismantled, erasing a vital part of France’s cultural legacy.
