Takaichi’s premiership begins under intense international scrutiny. U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Tokyo next week, and high on the agenda are trade talks and defense commitments.

Trump has been pressing Japan to cut Russian energy imports and boost defense spending, while unresolved trade issues continue to loom large.

Though known for her hardline stance on China, Takaichi has recently toned down her rhetoric, avoiding controversy by skipping a visit to the Yasukuni Shrine — a site honoring Japan’s war dead, often a flashpoint in regional diplomacy.

“I’d like her to be a prime minister who can clearly say ‘No’ when needed,” said Satoshi Sakamoto, a 73-year-old pensioner in her hometown of Nara, reflecting the public’s desire for a leader who can balance assertiveness with pragmatism.

5. Economic stagnation and demographic decline top her domestic agenda

Takaichi faces a daunting domestic landscape: an aging population, falling birthrates, and decades of economic stagnation.

Japan’s population continues to shrink, with fewer young people entering the workforce and consumer spending lagging. “Prices have gone up, and it’s tough,” said Nara resident Satoe Tominaga, 77. “Honestly, I mostly shop at 100-yen stores now.”

Her coalition government, a minority in both houses of parliament, will need support from opposition parties to pass any meaningful legislation, a test of both her political strategy and negotiation skills.

For now, many Japanese are cautiously optimistic. “She’s a strong-minded person, regardless of being a woman,” said Toru Takahashi, 76. “She’s not like Trump. But she’s clear about what’s right and wrong.”
