Could life on Mars still exist — or at least its chemical ghosts?

A new study is reigniting the search for life on Mars by suggesting that traces of long-dead microorganisms could still be preserved beneath the planet’s icy surface. Scientists have found that microscopic remains—like amino acids, the essential molecules that form proteins—might survive for up to 50 million years under Martian conditions, provided they’re sealed in pure ice.

To simulate life on the Red Planet, researchers recreated a miniature Mars inside their lab. They used E. coli bacteria—a hardy model organism—and froze it in pure water ice at around –60°F, a temperature typical of the Martian surface.

The study also uncovered how temperature and water content affect molecular survival.

At warmer, Mars-like temperatures, amino acids decayed more quickly because radiation produced mobile oxidants—highly reactive compounds that destroy organic matter. However, under frigid, Europa-like conditions, molecular decay slowed significantly.

Surprisingly, adding more water didn’t always speed up destruction, as earlier theories suggested. Instead, the team found that tiny liquid-like layers within minerals allowed radicals to move and cause greater damage.

In contrast, pure, solid ice immobilized these radicals, proving to be a far better long-term protector than wet clay or rocky mixtures.

What this means for the search for life on Mars

The findings reshape how scientists might approach future Mars missions. For decades, most searches have focused on rocky terrains and ancient riverbeds, assuming life’s traces would be fossilized there.

But this new evidence suggests that ice could be a far better time capsule. Pure ice could preserve organic materials for tens of millions of years, long enough for human or robotic missions to detect them.

This insight could guide the next generation of missions—like NASA’s Mars Ice Mapper or the European Space Agency’s ExoMars program—toward exploring polar and subsurface ice regions rather than dusty plains.

“The clues to Mars’s biological past may already be there,” the researchers noted, “locked in the frozen layers, preserved across cosmic time and shielded from decay.”
