How the Conspiracy Spread

The false claims first gained traction on fringe conspiracy websites and social media, where users falsely alleged that Brigitte Macron was born male under the name Jean-Michel Trogneux—a baseless theory that has since been repeatedly debunked.

Despite clear evidence disproving it, the rumor was amplified by far-right influencers and online accounts, especially those aligned with anti-Macron or anti-LBGTQ narratives.

By late 2021, the conspiracy had gone viral on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and Facebook, sparking widespread condemnation from journalists, fact-checkers, and political divs.

In response, Brigitte and French President Emmanuel Macron filed a defamation lawsuit in the United States earlier this year against individuals responsible for spreading the hoax.

The Trial: Ten Accused of Cyberharassment

Ten individuals are currently standing trial in Paris for what prosecutors describe as a “coordinated campaign of online harassment.”

They are accused of spreading “malicious comments” about Brigitte Macron’s gender and sexuality, turning a false rumor into a weapon of humiliation and psychological harm.

According to Auzière’s testimony, the attacks have affected three generations of their family. Her own children—Brigitte Macron’s grandchildren—are also targeted at school.

“They hear things like, ‘Your grandmother is a man,’” Auzière said. “I don’t know how to make it stop.”
