Disney’s networks—including ESPN, ABC, and FX—are going dark on YouTube TV after the companies failed to renew their licensing agreement. The standoff highlights growing tensions between tech platforms and traditional media giants over streaming rights and subscription costs.
On Thursday, YouTube TV announced that all Disney-owned networks will be removed from the platform after the two sides failed to reach a new licensing deal. The channels—ranging from ESPN and ABC to FX and Disney Channel—will disappear at midnight ET, according to Google.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), YouTube TV said:

“Our contract with Disney has reached its renewal date, and we’ll not agree to terms that disadvantage our members while benefiting Disney’s TV products.”
In response, a Disney spokesperson accused Google of leveraging its massive market dominance to secure favorable terms.
“With a $3 trillion market cap, Google is using its market power to undercut the industry-standard agreements we’ve reached with every other distributor,” Disney said in a statement.

If the blackout persists, YouTube TV subscribers will receive a one-time $20 credit—a small consolation for losing access to some of the most-watched channels in the U.S.
Here’s the full list of channels being pulled:
That’s a major portion of YouTube TV’s live content library—especially for sports fans and families.

While neither side disclosed specific terms, the core issue revolves around pricing and control.
Disney wants to maintain the same “carriage fees” it receives from other pay-TV providers. YouTube TV, meanwhile, argues that those fees would force them to raise prices for consumers, already paying $82.99 per month for the base plan.
This dispute mirrors a broader pattern across the industry: legacy media companies demanding higher fees to offset declining cable revenues, while tech platforms push back to keep subscription costs competitive.

“Disney used the threat of a blackout as a negotiating tactic to raise prices on our customers,” YouTube TV said. “They’re now following through on that threat, suspending their content while promoting their own live TV services like Hulu + Live TV.”
Disney, on the other hand, claims that Google’s size gives it unfair leverage in negotiations, enabling it to dictate terms that hurt content creators.
This isn’t YouTube TV’s first carriage dispute in 2025. The service—now one of the largest pay-TV distributors in the U.S.—has spent much of the year renegotiating contracts with traditional media firms.

The repeated disputes reveal a clear trend: streaming platforms are now the new battleground for cable, where tech and media titans vie for dominance over shrinking but still lucrative TV audiences.
The immediate impact is obvious: YouTube TV users lose access to dozens of popular channels overnight. But the long-term implications go deeper.
This battle is not just about contracts—it’s about who controls the future of live television.
Negotiations could resume behind closed doors, especially given the backlash from subscribers and advertisers. Historically, carriage disputes tend to resolve within days or weeks once public pressure mounts.
But the tension reflects a bigger story: the uneasy marriage between Big Tech and old-school media. Google’s YouTube TV, Apple TV+, and Amazon Prime Video now control access to the same audiences traditional networks once owned. Disney’s counterstrategy—pushing its own streaming bundles—signals how legacy players are adapting to survive.
Until a deal is reached, fans hoping to catch Monday Night Football or new episodes on FX will have to look elsewhere.
