Louvre Used ‘LOUVRE’ as Security Password Before $102M Art Heist

In a stunning revelation, France’s National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI) confirmed that the world-famous Louvre Museum was using “LOUVRE” as the password for its main security system, a detail that has shocked cybersecurity experts globally. The disclosure comes after a daring $102 million jewel heist on October 19 that saw eight priceless artifacts stolen from the museum’s Apollo Gallery.
The robbery, which lasted less than seven minutes, targeted some of the museum’s most prized pieces, including an emerald-and-diamond necklace gifted by Napoleon to Empress Marie Louise and the 19th-century crown of Empress Eugenie. The operation was described by investigators as “precise and cinematic,” echoing the finesse of an Ocean’s 11-style caper.
The Louvre’s vulnerability wasn’t new. A 2014 audit by ANSSI had explicitly flagged that the museum’s security systems, including its alarm controls and surveillance grids, were protected by the single-word password “LOUVRE.” The audit warned that this system was “where the museum’s most critical protection and detection equipment is connected.”

A year later, a 2015 follow-up audit found additional “serious shortcomings.” These included open rooftop access during renovations, faulty visitor management, and outdated operating systems — notably, the museum’s security servers were still running on Windows Server 2003, which had stopped receiving security updates in 2015.
Experts have since criticized museum officials for not acting on those warnings. Cybersecurity analyst Philippe Lemoine told Le Monde that “the failure wasn’t just technical — it was cultural. The museum treated cybersecurity as a bureaucratic chore rather than a core defence.”
Preliminary investigations suggest the robbers gained entry through a window on the museum’s less-patrolled eastern facade. The ANSSI report noted that this specific window was not covered by any CCTV cameras, a blind spot that thieves likely exploited after meticulous planning.

Once inside, they reportedly disabled alarm systems within seconds, likely due to knowledge of the outdated and weakly protected network. Investigators believe the criminals might have accessed the Louvre’s internal schematics and security layout, information that could have been exposed through earlier digital intrusions.
A former French intelligence officer quoted by Libération suggested the thieves “knew exactly which sensors to bypass,” indicating insider knowledge or prior reconnaissance.
During her testimony last month, Louvre director Laurence des Cars accepted responsibility for the lapse, citing “deficient infrastructure” and “insufficient surveillance coverage.” She stated, “Despite our efforts, we were defeated. We did not detect the thieves’ arrival early enough.”

Des Cars admitted that several exterior cameras were non-operational and that not all windows were under CCTV watch. The particular window used during the heist, she revealed, was undergoing renovation and not included in the live monitoring grid.
The museum has since begun upgrading its surveillance systems and strengthening cyber protections with new encryption protocols and AI-powered threat detection software.
French police have so far arrested four suspects connected to the robbery. Two were apprehended within a week, while two more were caught on October 29 after a cross-country manhunt. One suspect, believed to be the mastermind, remains at large.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the operation as “highly coordinated and technically informed,” hinting that the suspects may have had prior experience with digital security systems.
Investigators are now working with Interpol to trace the missing jewels, many of which are feared to have already been dismantled or smuggled into the underground luxury trade markets in Switzerland or the Gulf region.
The Louvre heist underscores a growing intersection between traditional theft and cybersecurity failures. In an era when museums rely heavily on interconnected alarm systems, network passwords have become as critical as physical locks.

Cybercrime experts note that cultural institutions, unlike banks or defense agencies, often underfund their IT departments. As a result, they remain prime targets for both hackers and thieves who exploit their outdated infrastructure.
“Art crime isn’t just about breaking in anymore,” said cybersecurity researcher Camille Perrault. “It’s about breaking passwords.”
In the wake of the scandal, the French Ministry of Culture has mandated cybersecurity audits across all national museums and heritage sites. The Louvre, meanwhile, has partnered with ANSSI to overhaul its network security architecture.
The stolen jewels, estimated to be worth over $102 million, remain missing. For now, the museum’s reputation has suffered nearly as much as its collection.
