Suspicious Package at US Military Base Sickens Several, Triggers Evacuation and Investigation

Authorities evacuated parts of Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C., after several people fell ill when a suspicious package was opened on Thursday, according to CNN reports. The incident prompted an emergency response involving HAZMAT teams, base security, and medical personnel.
A statement from the base confirmed that a building and its adjacent structure were cleared “as a precaution,” and a security cordon was established around the affected area. Several individuals were transported to Malcolm Grove Medical Center on the base for evaluation after reporting symptoms of illness.
According to two sources familiar with the investigation, the package reportedly contained an unknown white powder. However, preliminary field testing conducted by the HAZMAT unit did not detect any hazardous materials.

While the absence of immediate danger was reassuring, officials emphasized that testing remains ongoing to determine the exact nature of the substance. The Office of Special Investigations (OSI) has now taken over the case, working alongside federal authorities to trace the package’s origin and delivery method.
In a statement cited by CNN, base officials said,
“As a precaution, the building and the connecting building were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area. Joint Base Andrews first responders were dispatched to the scene, determined there were no immediate threats, and have turned the scene over to the Office of Special Investigations.”
The U.S. Department of Defense and Joint Base Andrews command have not yet issued detailed public comments about the incident or the ongoing investigation.

Joint Base Andrews is a critical U.S. military installation known for housing Air Force One, the official aircraft of the President of the United States. The base regularly hosts high-level national security operations and VIP movements, making it one of the most secure and closely monitored military sites in the country.
Given its importance, even minor security concerns, like the presence of unknown substances or suspicious packages, trigger swift lockdowns and multi-agency responses.
This is not the first time U.S. military facilities have faced similar incidents. Over the past decade, multiple bases and federal offices have received envelopes containing unidentified powders, often prompting biological or chemical hazard protocols. Most of these turned out to be false alarms, but each event underscores the persistent threat of mail-borne hazards and the need for constant vigilance.

Authorities are expected to conduct comprehensive laboratory testing of the substance and review security footage, mail logs, and personnel access records to trace its origin. The findings will determine whether the incident was a malicious act, a hoax, or mishandled material.
The Office of Special Investigations has not disclosed a timeline for releasing results but confirmed that “all personnel affected are stable and under observation.”
If the substance is confirmed to be harmless, the investigation will likely shift toward identifying how it entered the facility. If toxic or dangerous materials are detected, the case would escalate into a federal criminal investigation involving the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.

Mail-related security threats have long been a concern for U.S. authorities, particularly since the 2001 anthrax attacks, when letters containing deadly spores were sent to government offices and media organizations.
Even though most such incidents since then have proven to be false alarms, each case serves as a reminder of the continued vulnerability of mail-handling systems and the need for strict screening protocols, especially at military and government sites.
Consider adding an infographic showing the timeline of notable “white powder” scares in U.S. government facilities (2001–2025), including locations, outcomes, and security measures introduced afterward.
As of Friday morning, there were no reported fatalities or severe injuries related to the incident at Joint Base Andrews. The base remains operational, though the affected building continues to be cordoned off pending further inspection and clearance.
Authorities have urged caution but reassured personnel and the public that there is no ongoing threat.
