Three Chinese Astronauts Stranded In Orbit After Shenzhou-20 Capsule Hit By Space Debris

November 7, 2025

China’s Shenzhou-20 astronauts, Commander Chen Dong, Chen Zhongrui, and Wang Jie, were set to return to Earth this week after a six-month mission aboard the Tiangong space station. Their homecoming was abruptly postponed after suspected space debris struck their return capsule. Engineers are now assessing damage and risks before approving reentry, raising renewed alarm over the escalating threat of space junk in Earth’s orbit.

A Sudden Pause in a Routine Return

What was meant to be a routine return for China’s Shenzhou-20 crew has turned into an unplanned extension in space. The three astronauts, who launched in April 2024 and completed a successful six-month stay at the Tiangong space station, remain stranded in orbit after their return capsule was possibly hit by fragments of space debris.

The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) confirmed that engineers are performing a “comprehensive impact assessment and risk analysis.” Until the capsule’s safety is verified, the astronauts’ return has been “temporarily extended,” according to China’s state broadcaster, CCTV.

While the CMSA has not shared the extent of the damage, reports suggest the incident may involve micrometeoroids or debris fragments—some as small as paint flecks—travelling at speeds exceeding 25,000 km/h. Even a millimeter-wide particle can puncture spacecraft shielding or compromise heat protection during reentry.

Why Space Debris Is Becoming a Bigger Threat

Space debris—or “space junk”—refers to the growing cloud of defunct satellites, spent rocket stages, and collision fragments orbiting Earth. NASA estimates that more than 36,000 pieces larger than 10 cm and over 100 million smaller particles currently circle the planet.

Every nation with an active space program faces the consequences. The recent Shenzhou-20 incident mirrors NASA’s own experience earlier this year, when Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams and crewmate Butch Wilmore had their stay aboard the International Space Station unexpectedly prolonged due to spacecraft safety concerns.

The problem isn’t new, but it’s worsening fast. Low Earth orbit, where Tiangong, the ISS, and most commercial satellites operate, is now so crowded that even slight miscalculations can lead to catastrophic collisions.

Inside the Shenzhou-20 Mission

Launched on April 25, 2024, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre, Shenzhou-20 was China’s sixth crewed mission to the Tiangong space station. The mission’s crew includes Commander Chen Dong—a veteran on his third flight—and rookies Chen Zhongrui and Wang Jie.

During their six-month tenure, the trio conducted science experiments, performed maintenance tasks, and hosted educational broadcasts to engage younger audiences back on Earth. Before their scheduled return, they successfully handed over operations to the incoming Shenzhou-21 crew, temporarily increasing Tiangong’s population to six.

In what has now become a poignant moment, both crews were seen sharing a lighthearted “space barbecue” in a recent social media video—just days before the debris incident halted the Shenzhou-20 team’s return.

What Happens If the Capsule Can’t Return Safely?

According to Chinese space communicator Yu Jun (known online as “Steed’s Scarf”), engineers have activated Plan B—a standby spacecraft, Shenzhou-22, paired with a Long March 2F rocket on emergency alert.

If assessments reveal that the Shenzhou-20 capsule’s heat shield or structure is compromised, Shenzhou-22 could be launched as a rescue mission to retrieve the stranded crew.

Such contingency planning mirrors protocols followed by NASA and Roscosmos. During the Soyuz MS-22 coolant leak incident in 2022, for example, Russia deployed a replacement spacecraft to safely return its astronauts.

Why This Incident Matters Beyond China

This isn’t just China’s problem—it’s a wake-up call for the entire global space community. The Shenzhou-20 setback underscores how universal the space debris threat has become. Every orbital mission now operates in an increasingly dangerous environment.

In 2021, a Russian anti-satellite test created thousands of fragments, forcing the ISS crew to take shelter. Similar tests and unregulated satellite launches continue to multiply debris fields. Without strict international coordination, experts warn that we risk reaching the “Kessler Syndrome”—a chain reaction of collisions that could render parts of orbit unusable for decades.

The Road Ahead for the Tiangong Program

China’s Tiangong station remains a symbol of its growing ambitions in space exploration. Despite the current setback, Beijing has outlined plans to expand the station’s modules and enable long-duration missions comparable to those on the ISS.

However, the Shenzhou-20 incident highlights an uncomfortable reality: the more crowded the orbit becomes, the greater the risk for everyone. Space powers—including the U.S., China, India, and members of the European Union—will need to accelerate cooperation on debris tracking, removal technologies, and shared warning systems.

A Fragile Frontier

For now, Commander Chen and his crew are safe aboard Tiangong. But their unexpected delay is another reminder that space, for all its promise, remains a fragile frontier.

Whether China’s engineers repair the Shenzhou-20 capsule or deploy a new spacecraft, the outcome will test not just their technical resilience but the world’s collective resolve to confront the growing menace orbiting above us.
