Job Candidate Claims AI Bot Conducted Their Interview | Viral Reddit Post Sparks Debate
November 10, 2025

A viral Reddit post claiming a user was interviewed by an AI bot instead of a human has ignited debate about transparency and ethics in hiring. The story highlights a growing trend: companies quietly testing AI interviewers to screen candidates, often without disclosure. Is efficiency worth the loss of human connection?
It began like any other job interview. A Reddit user, posting on the popular r/interviews forum, described receiving an email from a recruiter inviting them to an online meeting. The link led to what seemed like a standard video call; a friendly woman appeared, smiled, and began asking questions about their experience.
But within minutes, something felt off. The interviewer’s facial movements repeated in a loop. Her expressions were oddly stiff, and the timing of her responses was unnervingly perfect, no pauses, no “ums” or “uhs.”

“She smiled, nodded, and fired off each question like a script,” the user wrote. “When I asked something back, her reply came instantly, almost too fast. That’s when I realized she wasn’t real.”
The candidate concluded their post with a question that resonated across social media: “I’m not against AI in hiring, but shouldn’t candidates at least be told if they’re talking to a bot?”
Within hours, the post gained thousands of upvotes and hundreds of comments. Some found the situation fascinating; others called it “creepy.” One HR professional wrote, “If your interviewer is a bot, candidates should be allowed to use ChatGPT to match the energy.”

AI has quietly become a staple of the recruitment pipeline, but what was once limited to résumé screening has expanded into real-time interviews.
According to a 2024 report from Fortune, more than 36% of Fortune 500 companies use some form of AI to evaluate candidates, from video-based assessments to automated scheduling and personality scoring. Tools like HireVue, myInterview, and Modern Hire use machine learning to analyze speech, tone, and facial expressions.
But what’s new and more controversial is the emergence of AI-generated interviewers. These are not prerecorded prompts but digital avatars that conduct full conversations, powered by large language models and real-time facial animation.

A recent study cited by Technology Magazine found that AI-led interviews generated 12% more job offers and 17% longer employee retention compared to traditional methods, suggesting that companies see measurable value in automation.
Still, experts warn that convenience can’t come at the cost of clarity. “If a candidate doesn’t know they’re speaking to a machine, that’s a breach of transparency,” says Dr. Michael Horowitz, a researcher on AI ethics at the University of Michigan. “Hiring isn’t just about assessment; it’s a human trust exercise.”
The Reddit post struck a chord because it encapsulates a growing discomfort with invisible AI. Job seekers already face automated rejection systems and algorithmic résumé filters. Now, the idea of being interviewed by an AI without consent feels like a tipping point.

Several users on the thread called the experience “dehumanizing.” Others worried about bias. “If a bot can misread an accent or tone, it could unfairly penalize people,” one commenter noted.
These concerns aren’t new. In 2021, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission over AI hiring tools, arguing they “exacerbate bias and lack transparency.” The FTC later warned employers that AI tools must not “screen out applicants in ways that violate civil rights.”
In short: if AI is going to play recruiter, it needs clear rules and disclosure.

The ethical question is simple: should companies have to tell candidates when an AI bot is running the interview?
From a legal standpoint, most countries, including the U.S., don’t yet mandate disclosure. A few states, like Illinois and Maryland, have introduced narrow rules requiring consent for video analysis or voice recognition, but those laws don’t cover AI-driven avatars.
From an ethical standpoint, however, disclosure seems obvious. Candidates expect a human connection, not a simulated one. When that expectation is broken, trust in the brand suffers.

AI ethicist Kate Crawford, author of Atlas of AI, puts it bluntly: “Transparency isn’t optional when you’re mediating a person’s livelihood through an algorithm.”
Whether you know it or not, you may soon face an AI interviewer yourself. Here’s what experts suggest:
Transparency begins with awareness.

Recruiters argue that AI saves time, reduces bias, and creates consistency. Critics argue it removes empathy and spontaneity, the very traits that define good workplaces.
Most experts predict a hybrid future, where AI conducts the early screening and humans handle the final rounds. But that balance will depend on evolving regulations.
In 2025, the European Union’s AI Act is expected to classify AI hiring tools as “high-risk,” requiring companies to explain how their algorithms make decisions. The U.S. has yet to adopt equivalent standards, but pressure is building from advocacy groups.

For now, HR departments are experimenting, and stories like this viral Reddit post are serving as public stress tests for what’s ethically acceptable.
The Reddit user’s question still lingers: If an interviewer can be AI, can’t candidates use AI too?
It’s a fair point. As AI reshapes recruitment, both sides of the hiring table are renegotiating what fairness means. A perfectly efficient interview might not be a fair one.
Human interviews are unpredictable, emotional, and occasionally flawed, but those imperfections can reveal authenticity. Replacing them entirely with AI may improve speed, but risks stripping hiring of its humanity.
The irony is that companies are using AI to find “the best people,” yet they may be building systems that forget what being human actually means.
