Trump-branded wines and ciders have appeared on the shelves of Coast Guard-run duty-free stores in Washington, D.C., and Centreville, Virginia, just in time for the holiday season. While administration officials insist the sales are legal, ethics watchdogs are questioning whether the move blurs the line between business and public office.
An image shared by an anonymous whistleblower, reportedly a Homeland Security employee, first brought the issue to light. The photo, posted on Instagram, showed bottles of Trump-branded wine and cider displayed prominently on a promotional table at a Coast Guard Exchange store.
The revelation quickly drew attention online, with critics pointing to possible conflicts of interest given President Donald Trump’s business empire and his role as Commander in Chief.

Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin confirmed the sale of the products, saying, “The brave men and women of the USCG are pleased to be able to buy Trump wine and cider tax-free.”
Administration officials have defended the move, stating that the sales do not breach any law. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the wines and ciders were supplied under a standard licensing arrangement. The President, they insist, played no direct role in the sales or distribution process.
Still, the optics have raised eyebrows. The Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution prohibits the president from receiving gifts or benefits from the government beyond their official salary. However, legal experts note that both the president and vice president are largely exempt from most federal ethics rules governing other officials.

“This is one of those things where there probably isn’t any legal issue, but there is an optics and ethics issue. People might believe that the president is personally benefiting from this.”
