Contender, the Atlantic’s Largest Male Great White Shark, Is on the Move Again

Contender — a 1,653-pound, 13-foot-long great white shark and the largest known male in the Atlantic, has been on the move once again. After months of migrating north to Canadian waters, the 32-year-old shark has been pinged off the coast of New Jersey as he begins his journey south toward warmer waters for the winter.
Contender isn’t just another great white shark, he’s the largest male ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean. Tagged by OCEARCH, a global marine research nonprofit, Contender has been a key subject in ongoing efforts to understand shark migration patterns, feeding behavior, and population health in the Western North Atlantic.
At an estimated 1,653 pounds and 13 feet long, Contender is believed to be about 32 years old, a mature male in the prime of his life. Scientists say his size and longevity make him a valuable specimen for studying the long-term migratory habits of great whites.

Contender was first tagged in January, near the Florida–Georgia coastline. Since then, his journey has traced a remarkable path up and down the Atlantic seaboard:
OCEARCH uses satellite tags to follow sharks like Contender in real time. For a location ping to register, the shark’s dorsal fin must break the water’s surface, and a nearby Argos satellite must capture the signal.
Each ping contributes to a growing database that helps researchers understand migration corridors, breeding grounds, and feeding hotspots. This data is shared publicly on OCEARCH’s interactive Shark Tracker, where anyone can follow Contender’s latest movements.

“Each ping adds another clue to the puzzle of white shark migration in the Western North Atlantic—and our team is tracking every move,” OCEARCH said in a recent update.
Marine biologists believe Contender’s movements are tied to seasonal temperature changes and food availability. During the summer, great whites move north to feed in cooler waters teeming with fish and seals. As winter approaches, they migrate south toward warmer regions like Florida and the Carolinas, where prey is plentiful.
This annual migration pattern is crucial to the species’ survival, and for scientists, it’s a roadmap of ocean health. By studying apex predators like Contender, researchers can better understand shifts in climate, fish populations, and marine ecosystems.

As winter nears, Contender is expected to continue his journey south, possibly returning to the same region off Florida and Georgia where he was first tagged. These waters provide the right temperature and abundant prey, making them ideal winter habitats for mature great whites.
Still, his exact route and how far he’ll travel remain to be seen. As OCEARCH notes, “We’ll have to see where he shows up next.”
Until then, each ping from Contender offers scientists and ocean enthusiasts another glimpse into the secretive world of one of nature’s most powerful predators.
Contender’s journey isn’t just a fascinating wildlife story; it’s a window into the broader challenges of marine conservation. Great white sharks play a vital role in maintaining the balance of ocean ecosystems, yet they remain vulnerable to overfishing, climate change, and habitat loss.
By tracking individuals like Contender, scientists are building the data needed to protect these apex predators and the oceans they help sustain.
