Wulingyuan, a breathtaking scenic and historical site in South Central China’s Hunan Province, has long been renowned for its dramatic landscapes and towering sandstone pillars. However, the region recently made headlines for an astonishing discovery—billions worth of gold hidden within its caves and a record-breaking elevator.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated in 1992, is home to more than 3,000 sandstone pillars, many soaring over 600 feet high. It also features picturesque ravines, gorges, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls. Among its many natural wonders is the Tianqiashengkong, or “Bridge Across the Sky,” one of the highest natural bridges in the world.
Wulingyuan’s most famous peak, known as Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, gained international recognition after being featured in the blockbuster film Avatar. However, the challenge of reaching its summit—a strenuous two-hour hike—has deterred many visitors from experiencing its spectacular views.

To address this, China undertook an ambitious engineering project: the Bailong Elevator, also known as the Hundred Dragons Elevator. Built into the side of a cliff, this double-deck glass elevator was constructed in October 1999 at a cost exceeding $20 million.
Standing at an impressive 900 feet, the Bailong Elevator is a marvel of modern engineering. Its lower 453 feet are embedded within the mountain, while the upper 510 feet are constructed with a steel derrick against the cliffside. The project was completed in 2002, instantly becoming a major tourist attraction in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
During the elevator ride, visitors can take in stunning sights, including The Gathering of Heavenly Soldiers—a breathtaking cluster of towering rock formations—and Gardens in Air, where traditional cottages perch atop the mountains. However, this thrilling ride is not for the faint of heart or those afraid of heights.

After a 2015 upgrade, the elevator now completes its ascent in just one minute and 32 seconds, traveling at a speed of approximately three meters per second. On July 16, 2015, Guinness World Records officially recognized the Bailong Elevator as the tallest outdoor elevator in the world. It was also celebrated as the fastest passenger elevator with the highest loading capacity.
The elevator consists of three fully exposed double-decker sightseeing lifts, each accommodating up to 64 people. When all three are in operation, the Bailong Elevator can transport an astonishing 6,000 tourists per hour.

The first few seconds you don’t see much as you are encased in the concrete foundation. But soon, you are thrust into a magnificent view of the surrounding area.
