Sometimes, the most beautiful stories begin with a mistake. For 26-year-old Jamal Hinton and 68-year-old Wanda Dench, one wrong text message changed everything, turning them into the internet’s most beloved Thanksgiving duo. This year, the pair celebrated a decade of their heartwarming tradition.

How One Wrong Number Sparked a Lifelong Friendship

According to a Daily Mail report, Dench and Hinton first connected in 2016 when Dench accidentally texted Hinton, mistakenly thinking she was messaging her grandson. The mix-up quickly went viral after Hinton playfully replied, “Still get a plate though?”

Dench didn’t miss a beat. “Of course you can. That’s what grandmas do, feed everyone,” she wrote back.

Hinton showed up for Thanksgiving dinner that year, and they’ve never missed a celebration since.

Reuniting After a Year Apart

The duo couldn’t meet in person last Thanksgiving because Dench was undergoing breast cancer treatment and was immunocompromised. Instead, they connected via Instagram Live, with Hinton passing his phone around so his family could send their wishes.

Dench shared during the livestream, “I just recently finished up with chemotherapy, so I’m not 100 percent yet… we decided that this year would be best for my health if I stayed at home.”

This year, cancer-free, Dench returned to the Hinton household for a long-awaited reunion.

A Milestone Celebration

To mark their 10th Thanksgiving together, Hinton and Dench partnered with Green Giant for a special holiday meal. The brand is celebrating its 100th anniversary — a symbolic pairing with the duo’s own decade-long milestone.

The company provided traditional dishes like turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie, while Hinton’s family added their own favorites, including prime rib, brisket, and mac and cheese. Sharing a behind-the-scenes glimpse on Instagram, Hinton wrote: “Thanksgiving prep is in full swing.”

Dench’s Health Journey and Resilience

Dench previously revealed that her cancer was found unexpectedly during a CT scan of her lungs. “That’s when a mass in my breast was detected,” she said, noting that cancer does not run in her family. With the support of her loved ones, she completed treatment and emerged with a renewed outlook, saying she learned “a lot of life’s lessons through it all” and emphasizing that “just because you may be older, you still have a life to live.”

A Bond Strengthened Through Loss and Distance

Their friendship has weathered personal loss, the pandemic, and long stretches apart. During COVID-19 lockdowns, Hinton and his girlfriend Mikaela dropped off home-cooked meals at Dench’s doorstep to keep her company from afar.

In 2020, Dench suffered the heartbreaking loss of her husband Lonnie to COVID-19. That Thanksgiving, Hinton, Mikaela, and Dench’s family gathered for an early dinner and placed a framed photo of Lonnie at the table to honor him.

What Their Unlikely Friendship Means

Dench has often said that Hinton taught her to stay open to unexpected connections, sharing that he showed her the value of embracing friendships “even when you think you have nothing in common.”

Hinton echoes that sentiment: “It’s amazing to have her as a friend and as my family,” he told Daily Mail.
