A special court in Dhaka has sentenced Sheikh Hasina, 78, to five years in prison in a high-profile land scam case involving 17 accused. Judge Md Rabiul Alam of Dhaka’s Special Judge’s Court-4 announced the verdict, which also handed:

• 7 years to Hasina’s sister Sheikh Rehana,
• 2 years to her niece and British lawmaker Tulip Siddiq, and
• 5 years each to 14 other defendants.

All 17 convicts were fined Tk 1 lakh. Failure to pay will add six more months to their prison terms.

This is the fourth corruption verdict against Hasina in cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Why Is Sheikh Hasina Facing Multiple Cases?

The ACC launched several corruption investigations soon after Hasina was ousted from power during student-led protests last year. The former prime minister fled Bangladesh on August 5, 2023, and has since been living at an undisclosed location in India.

Tulip Siddiq, 43, is a Labour Party MP in the UK and has represented Hampstead and Highgate since 2015. She is Sheikh Rehana’s daughter and the granddaughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding leader of Bangladesh.

In April, the interim government issued an arrest warrant for Siddiq as investigators probed alleged corruption during Hasina’s premiership. This case marks the first time a sitting British lawmaker has been sentenced by a foreign court in a corruption investigation linked to Bangladesh.

Her office in London has not yet issued a public response to the ruling.

According to the ACC, the defendants illegally obtained six land plots, each measuring 10 kathas (7,200 sq ft), in the high-value diplomatic zone of Sector 27, Purbachal New Town—one of Dhaka’s most coveted development projects.

The plots were allegedly secured:

• in violation of eligibility rules, and
• through collusion with senior officials from Rajuk, the capital development authority.

The ACC claims plots were acquired for:

• Sheikh Hasina
• Her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy
• Her daughter Saima Wazed Putul
• Her sister Sheikh Rehana
• Her niece Tulip Siddiq
• And several other relatives

The commission filed six corruption cases between January 12–14, 2024, and submitted the first chargesheet on March 10.
