Trump to become first sitting U.S. President to attend Super Bowl

Heightened security measures in place for historic appearance

U.S. President Donald Trump is set to attend Super Bowl LIX this Sunday in New Orleans, marking the first time a sitting president will be present at the event. The Kansas City Chiefs will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles in what is expected to be a highly anticipated game, according to the Associated Press.

While no sitting president has previously attended the Super Bowl, three vice presidents have made appearances. Al Gore was in attendance at the 1994 game in Atlanta, where the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Buffalo Bills. Before him, George H.W. Bush watched the 1982 game in Michigan, witnessing the San Francisco 49ers beat the Cincinnati Bengals. The first vice president to attend was Spiro Agnew, who watched the Baltimore Colts defeat the Dallas Cowboys in 1971.

In addition to attending the game, Trump will appear on Fox News for a pregame interview with Bret Baier. The interview, scheduled to air at 3 p.m. ET, will take place at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.

This marks the first time in three years that a U.S. president has participated in a Super Bowl pregame interview. Former President Joe Biden had declined similar interviews with Fox News in 2023 and CBS News in 2024. Interestingly, Trump himself rejected an NBC News interview in 2018 but had previously spoken with Fox News in 2017 and 2020.

Security tightened for Trump’s visit

With Trump’s attendance, security at the Caesars Superdome will be significantly heightened. The Secret Service has been working closely with event organizers to implement additional safety measures.

“Extensive planning and coordination have been in place to ensure the safety of all attendees, players, and staff,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told AP.

“Security measures have been further enhanced this year, given that this will be the first time a sitting President of the United States will attend the event.”
