Why Alan Dye’s move matters

In one of the biggest talent shifts in the tech world this year, Alan Dye, Apple’s head of user interface design and a nearly 20-year company veteran, is leaving the iPhone maker to join Meta. Dye has led Apple’s UI design team since 2015, shaping the look and feel of products from iOS to the Apple Watch.

Apple confirmed his departure Wednesday and announced that senior design leader Stephen Lemay will take over the role.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg later confirmed that Dye will join Meta on December 31, leading a newly formed creative studio within the company’s Reality Labs division.

Why the move is significant for Apple

Dye was one of the most influential design leaders at Apple following the era of Jony Ive. He helped oversee the company’s visual language during a period when Apple was shifting to flatter, more minimal UI systems across iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS.

His successor, Stephen Lemay, is a respected div within Apple’s design organization, known for his work on Apple Watch and several major software redesigns. CEO Tim Cook praised Dye’s contributions but did not elaborate on the reasons for his departure.
