100-Foot Sinkholes Are Swallowing Crops in Turkey, And Nearly 700 Have Already Formed

Sinkholes

TL;DR:

Turkey’s Konya Plain is seeing a surge in massive sinkholes—some more than 100 feet wide and hundreds of feet deep. Nearly 700 have formed due to groundwater depletion, drought, and climate change. Farmers are losing cropland as authorities work to curb illegal wells and monitor land subsidence.

What’s Behind Turkey’s Growing Sinkhole Crisis?

The Konya Plain in central Turkey has become one of the world’s most dramatic examples of land collapse. A recent assessment by Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority identified 684 active sinkholes across this major agricultural region.

Drone videos show enormous craters tearing through wheat and sugar beet farmland. According to Konya Technical University, more than 20 new sinkholes formed in the Karapınar district in the past year alone. Some span more than 100 feet across, plunging hundreds of feet deep.

Sinkholes have appeared in the region since the early 2000s, but the frequency has sharply increased. What once seemed like geological anomalies are now part of a growing and alarming pattern.

Why Are Sinkholes Increasing in the Konya Basin?

Groundwater Is Disappearing Rapidly

Konya Basin’s agricultural productivity depends heavily on groundwater pumping. Water-intensive crops like sugar beets and corn require deep wells that pull from underground aquifers.

Geological surveys show that groundwater levels have dropped by tens of meters over the past few decades. Once those aquifers empty, underground cavities lose structural support. The ground can no longer hold its own weight, leading to sudden collapse.

Drought Is Intensifying the Problem

Turkey has been facing increasingly severe drought cycles. NASA’s Earth Observatory observed that water reservoirs dropped to their lowest levels in 15 years in 2021. With less rainfall and greater evaporation due to rising temperatures, natural aquifer replenishment has slowed dramatically.

Climate change is amplifying these dry conditions, especially in central Anatolia.

Subsidence Is a Growing Warning Sign

Konya Technical University’s Sinkhole Research Centre has identified 1,850 areas showing signs of land subsidence. Subsidence is a slow sinking of the land surface that often precedes a full sinkhole collapse.

For farmers, this creates uncertainty. Even if the ground hasn’t collapsed yet, any field showing subsidence could eventually give way.

How Are Sinkholes Affecting Farmers?

Crops and Machinery Lost Without Warning

Farmers across Konya have watched fields collapse overnight. Entire plots of wheat, barley, and corn have vanished into newly formed craters. Irrigation lines and even tractors have been swallowed.

Farmers describe walking their fields “like walking on thin ice,” unsure when or where the next collapse might occur.

Illegal Wells Are Making Groundwater Loss Worse

Legal water supplies are often insufficient, especially during drought, pushing farmers to drill unauthorized wells. Authorities have increased inspections, but illegal wells remain widespread and are believed to number in the tens of thousands.

Every unregulated well accelerates groundwater depletion and raises the risk of new sinkholes.

What Can Turkey Do to Slow the Crisis?

1. Regulate Groundwater Use More Strictly

Authorities are already taking steps to shut down illegal wells, but experts warn that real-time monitoring of groundwater extraction is essential. Other farming regions, such as California’s Central Valley, have adopted similar systems to address land subsidence.

2. Reduce Reliance on Water-Intensive Crops

Shifting from crops like sugar beets and corn to varieties that require less water could help ease pressure on the aquifers. Improved irrigation methods such as drip systems may also reduce water waste.

3. Invest in Groundwater Recharge Projects

Artificial recharge basins—designated areas where water is allowed to seep back into aquifers—have shown success in other countries. Such systems could be adapted to Turkey’s geological conditions.

4. Use Early Warning Technology

Tools such as satellite-based land deformation maps, ground-penetrating radar, and risk zone mapping can help forecast potential sinkhole areas. This information can guide safer land use and planning.

Why Turkey’s Sinkholes Matter Globally

Konya’s sinkhole surge highlights a broader global problem: groundwater depletion. Similar collapses have appeared in Florida, Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, China’s Loess Plateau, and parts of Iran.

As drought intensifies and groundwater overuse continues worldwide, more agricultural regions could face the same fate. Konya is a warning of what happens when extraction outpaces natural recharge.

Will the Sinkhole Crisis Get Worse?

In the short term, more collapses are likely. The combination of shrinking aquifers, drought, and vulnerable geology creates conditions that are difficult to reverse quickly.

Long-term improvement is possible but depends on reducing groundwater extraction, improving water management, and adjusting agricultural practices. Without these changes, the number of sinkholes may continue to rise.
