“Trash Panda” Strikes Again: The Liquor-Store-Rampaging Raccoon Now Hits a Karate Studio for Snacks

TL;DR

The raccoon that made headlines for breaking into a US liquor store and passing out drunk has returned—this time targeting a karate studio and possibly a DMV office for snacks. Nicknamed “trash panda,” the furry repeat offender is suspected in at least three break-ins, underscoring how bold and human-adapted urban raccoons have become.

Who Is the “Trash Panda,” and Why Is He Back?

A month after his liquor-fueled escapade, the same raccoon is believed to have slipped into a karate studio in Hanover, causing yet another round of chaos. Animal control officer Samantha Martin told the BBC that the raccoon has become something of a serial intruder.

According to Martin, this is likely his third break-in. He may have also entered a DMV office and raided its snack supply. The raccoon has been spotted rummaging through trash at a shopping center as well. So far, he hasn’t been formally charged, mostly because the suspect is tiny, nimble, and extremely difficult to apprehend.

A Look Back: The Infamous Liquor Store Incident

In November, the raccoon shot to local fame after breaking into a liquor store and causing an estimated $250 in damage. The scene left behind broken bottles, toppled shelves, scattered boxes, and one raccoon found passed out face-first near a toilet.

Officials described him as showing “zero signs of injury other than maybe a hangover and poor life choices.” After sobering up for a few hours, he was released back into the wild.

Why Are Urban Raccoons Acting This Way?

While the story is amusing, scientists say it reflects a broader trend. A study in Frontiers in Zoology found that urban raccoons are evolving differently from rural populations. They now show a measurable reduction in snout length and a growing comfort level around humans.

Experts suggest that, over time, raccoons could become increasingly domesticated, or at least more accustomed to living near people, which may explain their increasing boldness when scavenging for food.

Is the Same Raccoon Behind Every Incident?

Officer Martin acknowledges there’s a chance more than one raccoon is involved in the recent chaos. But based on behavior patterns and sightings, the famous “drunk raccoon” remains the prime suspect. Until proven otherwise, he holds the title of Hanover’s most persistent snack-seeking bandit.

What Comes Next?

Officials have no immediate plans to relocate the raccoon unless he becomes a threat. For now, residents and businesses are encouraged to secure food, lock up trash bins, and reinforce entry points, especially if snacks are involved.
If this furry burglar has taught the town anything, it’s that raccoons have excellent memories and a strong motivation when food is on the line.
