Australian euthanasia activist Philip Nitschke, best known for creating the controversial Sarco pod, has unveiled a new assisted-dying device called the Kairos Kollar and disclosed that he is also developing what he calls a “suicide switch.”

Nitschke, the founder of Exit International, demonstrated the collar at a recent Exit International workshop, describing it as a drug-free method intended for assisted dying. The announcement has once again placed him at the center of ethical, legal, and regulatory debates surrounding end-of-life technologies.

What Is the Kairos Kollar?

The Kairos Kollar is the latest device presented by Nitschke, who has spent decades advocating for expanded access to assisted dying. According to him, the collar is designed to induce loss of consciousness without the use of medication.

Speaking during the workshop, Nitschke framed the device as an alternative to drug-based assisted dying, arguing that it could bypass pharmaceutical controls that exist in many jurisdictions. He later described the collar on social media as “fast, reliable,” and “unrestrictive,” language that has drawn criticism from medical and ethics experts.

No independent clinical data or regulatory approvals for the Kairos Kollar have been made public.

Why Nitschke’s Devices Are Controversial

Nitschke is no stranger to controversy. He is also the inventor of the Sarco pod, a 3D-printed capsule that gained global attention after it was used in a death in Switzerland in 2024.

Although assisted dying is legally protected in limited circumstances in Switzerland, that case prompted arrests and investigations. Critics argued that the Sarco pod did not meet established safety or product-regulation standards, raising questions about oversight, liability, and accountability.

Those same concerns are now being raised about the Kairos Kollar, particularly because it has been introduced outside any formal medical system.

The ‘Suicide Switch’ Concept Under Development

During the same event, Nitschke revealed that he is working on another device he referred to as a “suicide switch,” which he said is still under development.

He described it as a mechanism intended to address situations where a person may lose mental capacity in the future and therefore no longer qualify for assisted dying under existing laws. According to his explanation, the concept involves a long-term, pre-set system designed to act automatically if it is not consciously reset by the user.

The proposal has alarmed disability advocates and bioethicists, who argue that such a device raises profound questions about consent, autonomy, and the protection of vulnerable people. Legal experts also note that the idea would likely violate assisted-dying laws in most countries, which require contemporaneous consent and strict medical oversight.

Legal and Ethical Questions Remain

Assisted dying laws vary widely across countries and, in some cases, across states or regions within the same country. Most legal frameworks require:
