US Time Lagged Behind the Rest of the World by 4.8 Microseconds: What Happened

December 23, 2025

11:15

For a brief moment last week, the United States lagged ever so slightly out of sync with the rest of the world. Not by seconds. Not even by milliseconds. By 4.8 microseconds.

That gap is smaller than the blink of an eye and invisible in daily life. Yet it mattered enough to trigger alarms among timekeepers, scientists, and engineers who rely on extreme precision to keep modern systems running smoothly.

The cause was not a cyberattack or a software glitch. It was the weather. A powerful storm in Colorado knocked out power systems connected to America’s official timekeeping facility, creating a rare and revealing disruption in how national time is maintained.

What exactly happened to US time?

A severe storm swept through Colorado last week, bringing hurricane-force winds that damaged trees and electrical infrastructure. To reduce the risk of wildfires, the state’s largest energy provider carried out preventive power shutdowns across affected areas.

One of those areas was Boulder, home to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST. This facility houses the atomic clocks that define official US time, known as UTC(NIST).

Although the clocks themselves never stopped ticking, a failure in the backup generator disrupted the systems that measure, compare, and distribute their signals. As a result, UTC(NIST) slowed by 4.8 microseconds relative to global coordinated universal time.

That shift made US official time briefly lag behind the rest of the world.

Why does a storm affect atomic clocks?

Atomic clocks are famously stable. They do not depend on wall power in the way ordinary electronics do. At NIST, the clocks are protected by multiple layers of redundancy, including batteries designed to keep them running during outages.

The storm exposed a different vulnerability.

The clocks kept running, but the system around them did not

According to NIST supervisory research physicist Jeff Sherman, the atomic clocks themselves continued operating throughout the power outage. The problem was not the clocks. It was the connection between some of those clocks and the systems used to monitor and distribute time.

When the backup generator failed, parts of NIST’s measurement and distribution network temporarily lost synchronization. That meant the Boulder Internet Time Services, which many systems use as a reference, no longer had access to the most accurate combined clock signal.

In short, the clocks were alive and well, but the orchestra conductor lost the score.

How is American time determined?

NIST has served as the official timekeeper of the United States since 2007. Unlike the single clock you might imagine, US time is produced by an ensemble.

Inside NIST’s atomic clock system

At the Boulder laboratory:

  • Around 20 atomic clocks are maintained in total
  • Between 10 and 15 operate at any given time
  • The mix includes hydrogen masers and cesium beam clocks
  • These clocks run continuously and are compared against one another

Their signals are monitored by primary and alternate multi-channel measurement systems. These systems detect even tiny frequency changes and feed that data into a computer algorithm.

The algorithm calculates the most stable and accurate representation of US national time. That output becomes UTC(NIST), which is then aligned as closely as possible with international time standards.

What is the difference between UTC(NIST) and global UTC?

This distinction is subtle but important.

Global coordinated universal time, or UTC, is an international standard maintained by combining data from atomic clocks around the world. No single country controls it.

UTC(NIST) is the United States’ realization of that global standard. It is designed to match international UTC as closely as possible, but it is generated independently using US-based clocks and systems.

Under normal conditions, the difference between UTC(NIST) and global UTC is kept within extremely tight limits. The recent 4.8 microsecond lag briefly pushed that difference outside the usual range.

Why does a 4.8-microsecond error matter?

To most people, it does not. Your phone did not display the wrong time. Your meetings still started when expected. But at the infrastructure level, time is not just a convenience. It is a backbone.

Systems that depend on ultra-precise time

Even tiny timing errors can ripple through systems that rely on synchronization, including:

  • Telecommunications networks, where data packets must arrive in precise order
  • Financial trading platforms that timestamp transactions down to microseconds
  • GPS systems, which calculate position based on timing differences between satellites
  • Power grids, which use synchronized time to monitor and manage load

Sherman described the gap as “both big and small.” Small in human terms, big in technical ones.

Was the public affected?

No immediate consumer-facing problems were reported. That is not an accident.

Modern timekeeping systems are designed with buffers and redundancies precisely because disruptions can happen. Even when UTC(NIST) drifted slightly, most downstream systems either compensated automatically or relied on multiple time sources.

The incident was more of a stress test than a failure, revealing how resilient the system is and where it can still improve.

How was the issue resolved?

Power has since been restored at the NIST facility. Engineers are conducting assessments and repair work on the affected backup systems and measurement infrastructure.

Because atomic clocks never stopped running, correcting the offset did not require restarting or recalibrating the clocks themselves. The focus has been on restoring full connectivity between clocks, measurement systems, and time distribution services.

NIST routinely makes small adjustments to keep UTC(NIST) aligned with global standards, so bringing the system back into sync is a familiar process, even if the cause was unusual.

What does this reveal about modern timekeeping?

This episode underscores an important reality. Even the most precise systems on Earth still live in the physical world.

Precision meets infrastructure

Atomic clocks can measure time with astonishing accuracy, but they still depend on:

  • Electricity
  • Networking hardware
  • Backup generators
  • Physical facilities exposed to the weather

As climate-driven extreme weather events become more frequent, protecting critical scientific infrastructure will become increasingly important.

How rare is an event like this?

Extremely rare.

Minor timing offsets occur regularly as part of routine calibration and alignment with global standards. But a weather-related disruption that produces a measurable national-level lag is unusual enough to draw attention from scientists and the media.

That rarity is a testament to how robust the system normally is.

Why this story matters beyond the headline

The idea that “America lost time” makes for a striking headline, but the deeper story is about invisible systems that quietly keep the modern world running.

We rarely think about who sets the clock, how it stays accurate, or what happens when something goes wrong. This incident offered a rare glimpse behind the curtain.

It also served as a reminder that precision does not eliminate vulnerability. It simply shifts it to different places.

TL;DR

  • A storm in Colorado disrupted power systems at NIST in Boulder
  • Atomic clocks kept running, but the backup infrastructure failed
  • US official time, UTC(NIST), lagged global UTC by 4.8 microseconds
  • The gap had no noticeable impact on daily life, but mattered for technical systems
  • Power has been restored, and synchronization is being corrected
