Scientists studying the Great Salt Lake have identified a tiny animal never before documented by science, expanding what researchers know about life in one of North America’s harshest environments. Another possibility is long-distance transport by migratory birds. Birds are known to carry seeds, microbes, and small invertebrates across continents. It is possible that nematodes hitched a ride on feathers or feet from distant saline lakes.

When scientists examined wild samples, they found that fewer than one percent of the nematodes were male. In laboratory cultures, however, males made up roughly half the population.

The difference suggests the lake environment itself influences reproduction in ways scientists do not yet understand. Factors such as salinity, temperature, or microbial interactions may play a role.

The nematodes live in the upper layers of microbialite mats, feeding on bacteria. By doing so, they likely help regulate microbial populations and recycle nutrients within the lake.
