US Labels Muslim Brotherhood Branches in Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan as ‘Terrorists’; Egypt and Saudi Arabia Welcome Move

The United States has formally designated branches of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan as terrorist organizations, a major escalation in Washington’s approach to Islamist political movements in the Middle East. The decision, announced by the Trump administration, has been warmly welcomed by Egypt and Saudi Arabia, both longtime critics of the Brotherhood, while reigniting debate over how the US defines terrorism and political Islam.
The move follows sustained pressure from conservative allies of President Donald Trump, including influential right-wing divs, and aligns the federal government with actions already taken by Republican-led states such as Florida and Texas.
On Tuesday, the US Treasury Department and State Department announced coordinated sanctions against three Middle Eastern branches of the Muslim Brotherhood, arguing that they pose a threat to US national security and American interests.

The Lebanese branch was designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization, the most severe classification under US law. This designation makes it a criminal offense to provide material support to the group and exposes individuals and institutions to sweeping legal penalties.
The Jordanian and Egyptian branches were listed by the Treasury as Specially Designated Global Terrorists, a designation that freezes any assets under US jurisdiction and effectively cuts the groups off from the international financial system. US officials said both branches provided support to Hamas.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the decision reflects a determination to cut off funding and operational space for groups the US believes are linked to terrorism.

“The United States will use all available tools to deprive these Muslim Brotherhood chapters of the resources to engage in or support terrorism,” Rubio said in a statement.
The Treasury Department echoed that view, accusing the Brotherhood’s branches of presenting themselves as legitimate civic organisations while secretly backing militant groups, including Hamas.
Treasury undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence John Hurley said the Brotherhood has “inspired, nurtured, and funded terrorist groups like Hamas,” calling them direct threats to the safety of Americans and US allies.

The designations come after years of lobbying by prominent Trump supporters. Among them is Laura Loomer, who publicly urged the administration to take a harder line against the Muslim Brotherhood.
That pressure intensified after Florida and Texas, both led by Republicans, designated the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization at the state level, creating momentum for a federal decision.
For Trump’s political base, the move is seen as closing what they describe as loopholes that allowed extremist ideology to operate under the cover of political or social activism.

The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in 1928 by Egyptian scholar Hassan al-Banna as a religious and social reform movement. Over time, it grew into a transnational network with branches and affiliated organizations across the Middle East, ranging from political parties to charities and social groups.
Supporters argue the Brotherhood represents a form of political Islam that participates in elections and social work. Opponents counter that it has consistently acted as an ideological incubator for extremist movements.
Egypt banned the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013 following the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi, a senior Brotherhood div. Jordan imposed a sweeping ban on the organization in April, citing security concerns.

Egypt reacted swiftly, with its Foreign Ministry calling the US designation of the Egyptian branch a “pivotal step.” The ministry said Washington’s decision reflects the danger posed by the group’s ideology and the threat it presents to regional and international security.
For Cairo, the Brotherhood is viewed not just as a political rival but as a destabilizing force that challenges the authority of the state.
Saudi Arabia also welcomed the move. In a statement, the Saudi foreign ministry said it supports the US classification of the Brotherhood’s branches in Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon as terrorist organizations.

Riyadh has long regarded the Muslim Brotherhood as a threat to regional stability, accusing it of promoting political Islam that undermines established governments and fuels unrest.
US officials repeatedly cited alleged links between the Brotherhood’s branches and Hamas as the central justification for the designations. By tying the groups directly to Hamas, Washington strengthened the legal basis for sanctions, particularly under US counterterrorism laws.
The designations are likely to reinforce hardline policies already in place in Egypt and Jordan, where the Brotherhood has faced bans and arrests. In Lebanon, the Foreign Terrorist Organization designation could complicate the country’s already fragile political landscape and affect international engagement.

Critics warn that authoritarian governments may use the US move to justify broader crackdowns on dissent, while supporters argue that decisive action is necessary to curb extremist influence.
The decision aligns with Trump’s wider regional strategy, which has emphasized close ties with governments such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia, a hardline stance on Islamist movements, and an aggressive counterterrorism posture.
By formally designating the Brotherhood’s branches, the administration is signaling that it sees little distinction between political Islam and militant extremism when national security is at stake.
The practical effects will unfold over time as banks, charities, and international partners adjust to the new sanctions regime. Financial scrutiny of organisations with any perceived links to the Brotherhood is expected to intensify, and legal challenges to the designations are possible.
For now, the message from Washington is clear: the US is prepared to use its strongest legal tools against the Muslim Brotherhood’s regional branches, a move that has reshaped the diplomatic landscape across the Middle East.
The US has designated Muslim Brotherhood branches in Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon as terrorist organizations, citing alleged support for Hamas. Egypt and Saudi Arabia have welcomed the move, calling it a major step toward regional security. Supporters see it as long overdue, while critics warn it could deepen repression and instability across the region.
