When Should You See a Vein Specialist?
January 24, 2026

There is this thing that happens where people notice something wrong with their legs and just ignore it. Maybe the veins start looking a little weird. Maybe there is some aching that was not there before. And instead of doing something about it, most folks just hope it goes away.
Spoiler alert from someone who watched a family member go through this the hard way – it does not go away. My cousin Karen spent almost three years pretending those bulging veins on her legs were not a big deal. She kept buying longer skirts and making excuses about why her legs hurt after work. By the time she finally saw a vein specialist, what could have been a simple thirty-minute procedure turned into something way more complicated and expensive.
That whole experience got me thinking about how many people out there are probably in the same boat right now. Staring at their legs, wondering if they should be worried. Googling stuff at 2 am, trying to div out what those weird veins mean. Asking friends if their legs hurt too after standing for a while. So here is the real talk version of when you actually need to see a vein specialist and when you are probably okay to wait and monitor things.

Varicose veins are those twisted, bulging purple or blue veins that usually show up on the legs. They look like someone drew a road map under your skin with a shaky hand. Some people get them and feel nothing at all, which honestly seems unfair. Others deal with aching, throbbing, this burning sensation that makes standing for any length of time absolutely miserable. The weird thing is, you never know which camp you will fall into until they actually show up and start making themselves known.
Spider veins are the smaller cousin. Thin little red or blue lines that spread out like tiny tree branches or, well, spider webs. Usually more of a cosmetic thing, but not always. Sometimes they come with achiness too, especially after long days on your feet. A vein specialist can look at both types of veins and tell you exactly what is going on and whether you need to actually do something about it or if monitoring is fine for now.
Okay, so here is something that catches people off guard. Your legs start feeling heavy. Like really heavy. Not the normal tired after a long hike kind of heavy, but this persistent weighted down sensation that shows up even when you have not done much. It might come with aching or cramping or this restless feeling at night, where your legs just will not settle down.

What is actually happening? Blood is pooling in your legs instead of flowing back up to your heart as it should. The veins have these little valves that are supposed to keep blood moving in the right direction, but when those valves get weak or damaged, gravity wins, and blood just sits there getting stagnant. A vein specialist calls this venous insufficiency, and it is way more common than most people realize. The good news is that it is also very treatable once someone actually diagnoses it properly.
Ankles puffing up by the end of the day. Socks are leaving deep marks. Shoes that fit in the morning feel tight by afternoon. This kind of swelling happens because fluid is not draining properly from your lower legs. Veins play a huge role in that whole system, so when they are struggling, fluid builds up where it should not.
Now swelling can happen for lots of reasons, not just vein problems. Heart stuff, kidney stuff, just being on your feet too long on a particularly busy day. But if it keeps happening regularly, especially alongside other symptoms like visible veins or leg heaviness, that is your cue to get it checked out by a professional. A vein specialist can div out whether your veins are the culprit or if something else entirely is going on that needs different attention.

This is the one that really worries me when people brush it off. The skin around your ankles starts changing. Getting darker, taking on a brownish or reddish tint. Maybe the texture changes too, feels thicker or leathery, or just different from what it used to be. These changes mean the vein problems have been going on for a while, and things are progressing.
Left alone, this can eventually lead to venous ulcers, which are basically open sores that form near the ankles and refuse to heal. They are painful, prone to infection, and genuinely awful to deal with. If your skin is already changing, please do not wait for ulcers to show up before seeing a vein specialist. That is like waiting for the check engine light to turn into actual smoke coming from your car.
The appointment itself is not scary at all, despite what your brain might be telling you at 3 am when you cannot sleep. A vein specialist will ask about your symptoms, when they started, what makes them better or worse, that kind of thing. They look at your legs, probably while you are standing, since that is when vein issues show up most clearly. Then, usually, an ultrasound is performed to see how blood is actually flowing through those veins in real time. The whole thing is completely painless and takes maybe an hour, including all the paperwork and waiting room time.

After that comes the conversation about what they found and what to do about it. Sometimes the answer is they wear compression socks and let us keep an eye on it. Sometimes, it is we should treat this now before it gets worse. Either way, you leave with actual information instead of just worrying and wondering.
If you are picturing old-school vein stripping surgery with long hospital stays and painful recovery, forget all that. Seriously, just wipe it from your mind. Modern vein treatments are completely different from what people went through even twenty years ago. Most procedures are done right in the office, take under an hour, use just local numbing, and you walk out afterward on your own two feet. Seriously, people go back to work the next day and sometimes even the same day, depending on what they do for a living.
Sclerotherapy is probably the most common one. A vein specialist injects a solution into problem veins, and they gradually close up and fade away. Works great for spider veins and smaller varicose veins. For bigger ones, there is radiofrequency ablation, where they use heat delivered through a tiny tube to seal the vein shut. Your body just reroutes blood through healthier veins automatically. The whole thing is kind of amazing when you think about it.
Compression stockings also play a role either as a standalone treatment for mild cases or alongside procedures. Yeah, they are not exactly fashionable, but they genuinely help by squeezing your legs just enough to keep blood moving in the right direction.
Genetics plays a massive role here, which is kind of annoying, honestly. If your mom or grandma had varicose veins, your chances of getting them shoot way up. Not fair, but that is just how it works with genetics. Age matters too since veins lose elasticity over time, just like everything else in our bodies, unfortunately. Pregnancy is another big one because of all the extra pressure it puts on the circulatory system. And then some jobs involve lots of standing or sitting in one position for hours on end without moving around much.
If you check a few of those boxes, it might be worth getting a baseline evaluation from a vein specialist even if you are not having major symptoms yet. Prevention is always easier than treatment, and catching things early means more options if something does develop down the road. Think of it like getting your car checked before the engine light comes on, rather than after smoke starts pouring out.
