Horses Can Now “Say” Yes or No to Blankets Under New HorseVoice Project

HorseVoice

What is the HorseVoice project?

A research initiative known as HorseVoice is exploring a simple but radical idea: asking horses what they want and listening to the answer.

Run across Norway and Sweden, the project trains horses to use symbol-based communication to indicate whether they want to wear a blanket after exercise. The goal is twofold: to better understand horses’ cognitive abilities and to place greater emphasis on their emotional and welfare needs, according to reporting, citing Gizmodo.

At its core, HorseVoice challenges a long-standing assumption in the equestrian world—that humans always know what is best for the animal.

How horses communicate their choice

Instead of relying on body language alone, the horses are trained to interact with physical symbols that represent different options, such as “blanket on” or “no blanket.”

The training is conducted by students enrolled in equine studies programs at:

  • Strömsholm National Equestrian Center in Sweden
  • Skjetlein Upper Secondary School in Norway

After exercise, horses are allowed to choose between the symbols, effectively communicating their preference.

“Students in equine studies train their own horses to use the symbol method,” said Grete HM Jørgensen, a researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research, in an official statement. “For example, after exercise, the horse can choose whether it wants to wear a blanket or not.”

Why the question of blankets matters

Blanketing horses may seem like a minor decision, but it’s a surprisingly contentious one in equestrian care.

Overuse of blankets can cause:

  • Disruption of natural thermoregulation

Underuse, especially in cold or wet conditions, can lead to:

  • Muscle stiffness
  • Discomfort
  • Increased risk of illness

Until now, the decision has rested entirely with humans. HorseVoice asks a more provocative question: what if the horse knows best?

A response to welfare concerns in equestrian sports

The timing of the project is not accidental.

The equestrian world has faced multiple abuse allegations in recent years, including claims of harsh training practices and disregard for horses’ physical and emotional limits. High-profile cases involving celebrated riders have sparked public debate and discomfort within the sport.

According to Jørgensen, HorseVoice is also designed to address this cultural tension.

“When it is revealed that a former hero has treated horses poorly, it creates confusion and reflection,” she said. “This project provides space for exactly those kinds of discussions.”

Changing how students see horses

Beyond the animals themselves, the researchers are closely watching the human participants.

One of the project’s aims is to see whether students begin to view horses not merely as athletic tools, but as sentient beings with emotional needs.

That shift in perspective could be just as important as the scientific findings.

This isn’t the first time horses have “spoken”

The symbol method is not entirely new. Similar approaches have previously been used to allow horses to communicate basic preferences, such as:

  • Which blanket style do they prefer
  • Whether they want access to the outdoors
  • Environmental comfort choices

What makes HorseVoice different is its systematic focus on welfare-related decisions and its integration into formal equestrian education.

The ethical question no one can ignore

The project also opens the door to a far more uncomfortable question.

What happens if horses begin using symbols to say no, not just to blankets, but to being ridden?

Researchers acknowledge the ethical tension. Giving animals a voice invites responsibility. Selectively listening only when their answers are convenient would undermine the entire premise.

For now, HorseVoice is limited to welfare-related choices, but the debate it sparks may extend much further.

What happens next

The HorseVoice team is developing a symbol-method handbook for:

  • Trainers
  • Horse owners
  • Riding schools
  • Educational institutions

If successful, researchers believe the project could lead to lasting changes in attitudes and daily practices across the equestrian sector, influencing how horses are trained, handled, and cared for.

Why this study matters beyond horses

HorseVoice reflects a broader shift in animal welfare science, from managing animals to communicating with them, as far as their cognitive abilities allow.

It raises a simple but powerful idea: improving welfare doesn’t always require new technology. Sometimes, it starts by asking and accepting the answer.

TL;DR

  • The HorseVoice project trains horses to use symbols to say whether they want a blanket
  • The initiative runs in Norway and Sweden with equestrian students
  • Researchers aim to better understand horse cognition and emotional needs
  • The project responds to growing welfare concerns in equestrian sports
  • It could reshape how horses are treated, not just as athletes, but as sentient partners
