The release of American Murder: Gabby Petito, a new Netflix docuseries, has reignited public interest in the high-profile case of Gabby Petito’s murder and the involvement of her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie. The case, which captivated the nation in 2021, ended with Laundrie taking his own life after Petito’s body was discovered in Wyoming.

The tragic case of Gabby Petito

Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie set out on a road trip in 2021, documenting their travels for Petito’s YouTube channel. However, Petito never returned home. Her body was later found in Wyoming, with an autopsy confirming she died by homicidal strangulation.

As authorities searched for Petito, Laundrie was located at his parents’ home in Florida, where he and his parents, Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, claimed to have no knowledge of her whereabouts. The couple also refused to cooperate with law enforcement.

Shortly after, Laundrie himself disappeared, and his remains were eventually found in Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park, Florida. Authorities ruled his death a suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Who are Christopher and Roberta Laundrie?

Christopher and Roberta Laundrie have lived in Florida for years. When Brian and Gabby began dating, they moved in with his parents before embarking on their cross-country van trip.

During the search for Brian, his parents initially stated they had no knowledge of his whereabouts. However, they later assisted authorities in locating his body. Following the confirmation of his suicide, the family’s attorney, Steve Bertolino, told PEOPLE:

“Chris and Roberta are still mourning the loss of their son and are hopeful that these findings bring closure to both families.”

Legal battles and accusations

In 2022, Gabby Petito’s parents, Joseph and Nichole, filed a lawsuit against the Laundries, alleging they helped their son cover up Gabby’s murder and even planned to help him flee the country. The lawsuit was settled in November 2022.

Bertolino confirmed the resolution in a statement to Fox News:

“Christopher and Roberta Laundrie and I participated in mediation with the Petito family, and the civil lawsuit has now been resolved. The terms of the resolution are confidential, and we look forward to putting this matter behind us.”

Petito’s mother condemns Roberta Laundrie

During CrimeCon in Nashville in 2024, Gabby’s mother spoke out against Roberta Laundrie, calling her the “mastermind” behind the actions that followed Petito’s death.

“As for you, Roberta, and I call you out individually because you are evidently the mastermind that shattered your family and mine with your evil ways. I see no empathy in your eyes,” she said.

Where are Brian Laundrie’s parents now?

Christopher and Roberta Laundrie continue to reside in Newport, Florida. In June 2024, they were photographed outside their home, where their late son’s car was still parked in the driveway.

Despite widespread speculation and controversy, the Laundries have never been charged with any crime related to the case.
