New study links surge in brain activity of dying patients to soul leaving the body

In a groundbreaking revelation, Dr. Stuart Hameroff, an anesthesiologist and professor at the University of Arizona, has proposed that a surge of energy observed in the brains of dying patients may signify the “soul leaving the body.” This assertion stems from a recent study that monitored a clinically dead patient’s brain activity using electroencephalogram (EEG) sensors, which recorded an unusual burst of energy after death.
During an interview with Project Unity on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Dr. Hameroff explained that researchers detected this phenomenon in patients who had “no blood pressure” and “no heart rate.” He noted, “They saw everything go away and then [psh] you got this activity when there was no blood pressure, no heart rate.” This burst of activity, known as gamma synchrony—a brain wave pattern associated with conscious thought and awareness—was observed lasting anywhere from “30 to 90 seconds” after clinical death.
While some skeptics argue that this could merely be the “last gasp” of neurons firing or an illusion, Hameroff contends that it may represent consciousness departing from the body. He speculated that consciousness operates at a “deeper level” and does not require as much “energy consumption” as other brain functions, making it potentially “the last thing to go” during the dying process.

“The point is it shows that consciousness is actually, probably, a very low energy process,” he stated.
Dr. Hameroff credited Dr. Lakhmir Chawla for pioneering this monitoring technique in previous studies. Anesthesiologists have routinely employed EEGs to ensure there is no brain activity in organ donors before the harvesting process.
According to Hameroff, “This has been a fairly reproducible event; not 100% like 50% of patients show this when you measure it.”

In addition to his findings, Hameroff referenced research conducted by Dr. Robin Lester Carhart-Harris, who explored the effects of psilocybin—a psychoactive compound—on brain activity. In Carhart-Harris’s study, volunteers reported experiencing vivid hallucinations while their brain scans showed no activity during the tests. Hameroff remarked on this paradox: “I think they were expecting the MRI to light up like a pinball machine when they gave them the psilocybin because all this stuff would be going on. They were at a loss to explain this.”
Hameroff introduced the concept of “quantum level brain activity,” suggesting that certain brain functions may operate on a quantum scale beyond traditional neural pathways. This theory posits that consciousness could be a collective quantum vibration within neurons.
He believes that Carhart-Harris’s findings may also shed light on why there is an increase in brain activity at the end of life. “I think consciousness is actually low energy,” he concluded.
As research continues into the complexities of consciousness and its relationship with brain activity during dying moments, these findings could open new avenues for understanding near-death experiences and what occurs as life comes to an end.
