OpenAI whistleblower Suchir Balaji’s death ruled as suicide: Mother demands FBI investigation

The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) has officially closed the investigation into the death of OpenAI whistleblower Suchir Balaji, ruling it as a suicide. However, Balaji’s mother, Poornima Ramarao, has expressed strong doubts about the findings and is urging the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to intervene.

SFPD and medical examiner rule death as suicide

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) and the SFPD jointly released a statement on February 14, concluding that Balaji’s death was caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

“The pistol found at the scene was purchased and registered to Mr. Suchir in January 2023. A review of the desktop computer revealed searches for brain anatomy. A witness statement from Mr. Balaji’s mother indicated that he had been under stress due to quitting his job,” the report states.

The forensic analysis found no other injuries or bruises on Balaji’s body, no signs of forced entry, and confirmed that he was alone at the time of his death. Gunshot residue was detected on Balaji’s hands, and his DNA was present on the firearm.

SFPD emphasized that the case would only be reopened if new evidence emerges that warrants criminal charges.

Family disputes findings, claims foul play

Balaji’s parents, Poornima Ramarao and Balaji Ramamurthy, remain unconvinced by the police’s conclusion. They believe their son was murdered in retaliation for his whistleblowing activities at OpenAI, where he had raised concerns about alleged copyright violations.

“We already know from the autopsy report that he could not have done that (committed suicide). One of the drugs made him lose muscle control. The gun did not touch or was not near his body. We are waiting for confirmation from our forensic expert,” said Ramarao.

Allegations of drugging

Balaji’s mother suspects that he was drugged before his death, though the official report has not identified any specific substance.

“There are tons of illegal drugs that ordinary people can’t purchase that take away muscle movement. We need toxicologist reports,” she added.

Call for FBI investigation

The family is now seeking an FBI investigation to determine if Suchir Balaji’s death was, in fact, a homicide.

“We need to get an investigation from the FBI to see who did this. We can go until homicide is established. Many steps have yet to be completed, including fully examining the letter from the OCME and the SFPD,” Ramarao stated.

As the case continues to generate controversy, legal and forensic experts are closely watching developments. Whether federal authorities will take up the case remains to be seen.
