Washington, D.C.: Senator Elissa Slotkin, a first-term Democrat from Michigan, delivered a direct and measured rebuttal to President Donald Trump’s lengthy and combative Congressional address on Tuesday night. Speaking from Wyandotte, Michigan, she warned that Trump was “going to make you pay in every part of your life,” arguing that his policies would increase healthcare costs and place a greater financial burden on Americans.
Slotkin, 48, who secured a hard-fought Senate victory last year, took on the formidable challenge of countering a president she accused of “cosying up to dictators like Vladimir Putin.”
Born and raised in Michigan, Elissa Slotkin attended Cranbrook Kingswood School in Bloomfield Hills before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Cornell University in 1998. She later obtained a Master’s degree in International Affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs in 2003.

Fluent in Arabic and Swahili, Slotkin was recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) after graduation. As a Middle East analyst, she completed three tours in Iraq alongside the U.S. military.
Slotkin later transitioned to key national security roles in the White House, first working on the Iraq portfolio under President George W. Bush and later serving in the State Department and Department of Defense under President Barack Obama. From 2015 to 2017, she served as the Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, overseeing critical issues such as the fight against ISIS and U.S. responses to Russian aggression.
Slotkin’s decision to run for office was deeply personal—her mother, who had ovarian cancer, struggled with high healthcare costs due to pre-existing conditions. This experience pushed her to enter politics.

In 2018, Slotkin won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, flipping a Republican-held district in the critical swing state of Michigan as part of a wave of Democratic women with military and intelligence backgrounds. Throughout her tenure in Congress, she repeatedly opposed Trump’s policies.
In 2024, Slotkin ran for the U.S. Senate and won against former Congressman Mike Rogers, becoming the youngest Democratic woman elected to the Senate at age 48. She now serves on key committees, including the Armed Forces, Homeland Security, Agriculture, and Veterans Affairs.
During Trump’s Congressional address, Slotkin dismissed his economic promises, pointing to a statement made by Elon Musk, who recently called Social Security “the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time.” While Slotkin agreed that government waste should be reduced, she argued that reforms should not be chaotic or compromise national security.
She also issued a stark warning about the threats to democracy, urging Americans to remain vigilant.
“I’ve seen democracies flicker out,” she cautioned. “You can’t criticize the guys in charge without getting a knock on the door in the middle of the night.”
