A Connecticut woman has been arrested and charged after authorities uncovered that she held her stepson captive in horrific conditions for over two decades. The man, now 32, revealed that he intentionally set fire to their family home in a desperate attempt to gain his freedom, ultimately leading to his escape from what has been described as a “horror movie” scenario.
Kimberly Sullivan, 56, was detained and charged with multiple serious offenses on Wednesday, following a month-long investigation into the disturbing circumstances surrounding her stepson’s captivity. The revelations came to light after the house caught fire in February, sparking an investigation that uncovered the extent of the abuse.
According to court documents, on February 17, Sullivan left the house, and her emaciated stepson—who weighed just 68 pounds—was rescued by firefighters after the blaze. The man admitted to starting the fire himself, igniting a small storage area where he had been confined for years.

“I wanted my freedom,” he told firemen when they arrived at the scene.
The stepson’s harrowing account paints a chilling picture of his life under Sullivan’s control. Described as “extremely emaciated” with “matted and unkempt” hair, decaying teeth, and a filthy appearance, the man’s physical condition reflected the years of neglect he had endured. According to police reports, the victim had not seen a doctor or dentist since he was a child. His captivity began when he was just 11 years old.
Sullivan reportedly locked her stepson in a room, initially with a chain lock, then a padlock, and later with a sliding bolt. For most of his life, his days followed a grim and “brutally consistent” routine. After being removed from school, he was allowed to leave his room only briefly in the mornings to perform household chores. His living conditions deteriorated further when he was moved to a cramped, 8-by-9-foot storage room at the age of 12, which lacked both heating in the winter and air conditioning in the summer.

The victim’s suffering was noticed by others long before his escape. School officials contacted the Department of Children and Families (DCF) when the man was in fourth grade. They reported that the boy was often seen starving and malnourished. However, under duress from his stepmother, the boy was coerced into lying, claiming that everything was fine at home.
“The suffering this victim endured for over 20 years is both heartbreaking and unimaginable,” Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo said in a statement.
Former neighbors, like Paula Depina, also raised concerns. Depina, who lived next door to the family, recalled feeling something was amiss whenever she saw the man peering out of the windows.

Kimberly Sullivan now faces a range of serious charges, including first-degree assault, second-degree kidnapping, first-degree unlawful restraint, first-degree cruelty to individuals, and first-degree reckless endangerment. If convicted, she could face significant prison time for her actions.
Sullivan’s attorney, however, denied the allegations. “My client is blown away by the accusations and is stunned by what is being said. She maintains her innocence and intends to vigorously defend herself in court,” the lawyer said.
