Florida man arrested for making assassination threats against US President Trump

In a shocking incident, a 46-year-old West Palm Beach resident has been arrested for allegedly threatening to kill President Donald Trump. Shannon Depararro Atkins was taken into custody on January 24, following a tip received by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) regarding his violent social media posts.

Timeline of events

The investigation began after the FBI’s National Threat Operations Center received a report on January 19, just one day before Trump’s inauguration. The tip pointed to Atkins, who had been making alarming posts on Facebook directed at the former president.

According to reports from CBS News’ West Palm Beach affiliate WPEC, Atkins shared a series of disturbing messages, including one that featured images of historical divs such as Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr., captioned with the ominous statement, “Unfortunately, one is still alive.”

Another post declared that January 20—the day of Trump’s inauguration—would be a “Day of Mourning for USA,” accompanied by a plea for “Bullets, please. Jesus! Save America.” In a further escalation, Atkins wrote, “I’ve been banned from X because I said I hope and pray someone kills him. We haven’t had an assassination in years.”

Arrest details

Atkins was apprehended at approximately 7:30 PM local time near his home in West Palm Beach. During the arrest, police discovered cocaine in his possession. Following his arrest, Atkins admitted to making the threatening posts but claimed he was merely “joking.” However, West Palm Beach Police Chief Tony Araujo emphasized the seriousness of such statements: “Folks, this is not a joke. Nothing of that sort is a joke.”

Atkins now faces serious charges, including a second-degree felony for making written or electronic threats to kill or cause bodily harm, as well as possession of cocaine. He has been ordered to have no contact with Trump or his family and is prohibited from accessing weapons or the internet. The U.S. Secret Service has been notified of the threats and is currently deliberating whether federal charges will be filed against Atkins.

Community concerns

This incident raises significant concerns regarding the climate of political discourse in the United States. Chief Araujo remarked on the gravity of such threats in today’s environment, stating, “We have incident after incident, example after example, of when these threats become real, and we take these very seriously.” As authorities continue their investigation, they urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

As this case unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences that can arise from incendiary rhetoric in an increasingly polarized political landscape.
