An American Airlines flight from Hartford to Chicago was thrown into chaos after a Kansas man launched a violent outburst mid-flight, assaulting a crew member and alarming passengers, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice.
The suspect, identified as Julius Jordan Priester, is now facing serious federal charges and could spend up to 20 years behind bars for interfering with flight crew members — a federal offense.
Approximately 30 minutes after takeoff from Bradley International Airport in Connecticut, passengers watched in disbelief as Priester suddenly removed his shirt, ran toward the rear of the aircraft, and shouted, “Help me.”

According to multiple witness accounts cited in People magazine and the DOJ release, Priester then turned toward a seated flight attendant, seized her, and declared, “You’re coming with me.” He attempted to forcibly drag her up the aisle, prompting several alarmed passengers to intervene.
With the help of bystanders, the flight crew was able to restrain Priester and return him to his seat. Witnesses described his behavior as incoherent and erratic even after he was subdued.
Upon being informed of the onboard security threat, the pilot declared an emergency and diverted the flight back to Bradley International Airport. Upon landing, Connecticut State Police boarded the aircraft and took Priester into custody.

He was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for a medical evaluation. The FBI and state police have launched a joint investigation into the incident.
Priester has been charged with interference with flight crew members and attendants, a felony that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison under federal law. He is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing on May 30.
American Airlines has not yet released a formal statement, but the incident underscores ongoing concerns about disruptive passenger behaviour, a trend that has plagued airlines since the pandemic.
