Chicago Weather: Over 5 Inches of Rainfall in Just 90 Minutes on Tuesday Night

CHICAGO (July 9, 2025) — A fast-moving storm brought intense downpours and flash flooding to parts of downtown and the West Side Tuesday night, catching many drivers off guard and leaving cars stranded in rising waters.

According to ABC7 AccuWeather Meteorologist Tracy Butler, radar estimates show that more than five inches of rain fell in just an hour and a half in Chicago, overwhelming drainage systems and transforming some roads into flood zones.

Floodwaters Trap Cars Under Viaduct

One of the hardest-hit areas was the intersection of Ogden and Western, where video footage showed multiple vehicles stuck under a viaduct. Drivers who attempted to pass through were quickly overcome by water levels that rose rapidly.
