Drug lord arrested in UK after wife’s Instagram posts reveal location

Luxurious vacation ends in arrest

Luis Manuel Picado Grijalba, widely known as “Shock,” a notorious drug lord wanted by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), was apprehended at a London airport in December. The arrest was made possible after officials tracked his wife’s location through her Instagram posts, which revealed the couple’s European vacation itinerary.

Shock, a dual US-Costa Rican citizen, is accused of orchestrating large-scale cocaine shipments from Limon, Costa Rica, to the United States. He had traveled to Europe to celebrate the New Year with his wife, Estefania McDonald Rodriguez, reportedly spending $20,000 on flights for his wife and family.

Social media trail leads to capture

Rodriguez, active on her now-deleted Instagram account, shared photos documenting the couple’s extravagant holiday. Images included her posing in front of iconic landmarks such as the Trevi Fountain in Rome and a beachside location. However, a post from Paris featuring the couple provided DEA agents with the critical lead they needed.

Grijalba, who had met his wife in Paris, planned to spend New Year’s Eve in England. Acting swiftly, the DEA obtained an international warrant and coordinated his arrest at the London airport.

The DEA had long sought to capture Grijalba but strategically waited for an opportunity outside Costa Rica, as the country’s laws prohibit the extradition of its own citizens.

Costa Rican authorities under scrutiny

While the DEA prepares serious charges against Grijalba, Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department (OIJ) confirmed that no active case existed against him in his home country.

“For us, it is also an important capture because we had not been able to attribute any criminal act to him in our country,” said Costa Rica’s Attorney General Carlo Diaz.

The arrest has sparked criticism from Costa Rican officials, including President Rodrigo Chaves Robles and Security Minister Mario Zamora.

“It is outrageous that the Costa Rican police…with everyone knowing what Shock does, do not even have an open case against him, while the gringos leave the country and capture him in London. What do the gringos have that the OIJ does not have? Is it decency?” President Chaves said.

OIJ defends its position

In response, OIJ director Randall Zuniga acknowledged that US authorities have access to more advanced investigative tools, including sophisticated phone-tracking technology.

Grijalba’s arrest has drawn attention to Costa Rica’s limitations in prosecuting high-profile drug traffickers and raised questions about the country’s judicial and investigative processes.
