US Millionaire Gored to Death by Cape Buffalo on African Safari

“Black Death” Buffalo Charges at Hunter During South African Expedition

Limpopo, South Africa – A 52-year-old American millionaire, Asher Watkins, was killed on Sunday during a trophy hunting expedition after being gored by a Cape buffalo—an animal widely feared and locally nicknamed the “Black Death.”

Fatal Encounter During High-Stakes Safari

Watkins was on a guided £7,500 (approx. $9,500) hunting safari with Coenraad Vermaak Safaris in the 50,000-acre Bambisana concession in South Africa’s Limpopo Province. He had been tracking a 1.3-ton (approximately 200-stone) Cape buffalo bull when the animal suddenly charged at a speed of 35 mph, fatally injuring him.

According to safari operator Hans Vermaak, the buffalo’s attack was both “sudden and unprovoked” and the animal was unwounded at the time.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we confirm the tragic death of our client and friend Asher Watkins from the USA,” Vermaak told The Sun. “He was tracking it together with one of our professional hunters and one of our trackers. This is a devastating incident, and our hearts go out to his loved ones.”

Nicknamed “Black Death” for a Reason

The Cape buffalo is considered one of Africa’s most dangerous game animals, reportedly responsible for around 200 human deaths annually, more than lions, rhinos, or crocodiles. Known for its unpredictable and aggressive nature, it often charges without provocation.

The safari company’s website emphasizes the dangers of hunting the species:

“No species on the planet has a more fearsome reputation than a Cape Buffalo… Buffalo are known to charge unprovoked, so prepare for the worst.”

Family Left in Shock

Watkins’ mother Gwen, stepfather, and brother Amon were at the safari lodge waiting for him when the fatal incident occurred. The safari company has stated it is providing full support to the grieving family both in South Africa and back in the United States.

Prominent Figure in Ranching and Hunting Circles

Watkins built his fortune through the Texas-based Watkins Ranch Group, dealing in luxury ranch properties valued at up to £30 million. He was affiliated with Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty and was a member of the Dallas Safari Club.

An avid hunter and gun collector, Watkins often shared photos on social media showcasing his global hunting adventures and an impressive collection of high-end rifles, including images with trophies such as mountain lions and deer.
