Texas Rolls Out New Driver’s License and ID Card Design With Stronger Security: All About It
August 19, 2025
12:01
Starting this week, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has introduced a redesigned driver’s license and identification card aimed at tightening security and making identity theft harder.
Sheri Gipson, Chief of the DPS Driver License Division, said the upgrade is more than cosmetic. “The way a driver’s license is made plays a big role in keeping the public safe,” she explained, noting that the new design is harder to counterfeit and offers stronger protections against stolen identities.
The biggest change is the card itself. The new licenses and IDs are made from durable, tamper-resistant polycarbonate. Unlike traditional plastic cards, polycarbonate is nearly impossible to peel apart or alter, making counterfeiting significantly more difficult.

These cards also comply with standards set by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), aligning Texas with nationwide security guidelines.
A black, laser-engraved star has replaced the familiar gold star in the upper right-hand corner. This change keeps the card compliant with REAL ID requirements, which are federally mandated standards for identification used in air travel and to access federal facilities.
In addition to stronger materials and enhanced security, the updated design focuses on user experience. Personal details such as name, date of birth, and address are arranged in a clearer format, making the cards easier for officials to read and verify quickly.
Identity theft remains one of the fastest-growing crimes in the United States, and counterfeit IDs are often at the center of fraud schemes. By strengthening the physical security of state-issued identification, Texas DPS is aiming to cut down on criminal misuse while giving residents added peace of mind.
With the rollout, Texas joins other states that have already moved to polycarbonate-based IDs, a material considered the gold standard for secure identification.
