Virginia Woman Wins $150,000 in Lottery Using ChatGPT, Donates It All To Charity

How did ChatGPT help pick the winning numbers?

Carrie Edwards from Virginia has made headlines after winning $150,000 in the Powerball lottery with the help of ChatGPT. Edwards asked the AI tool to generate a set of numbers, which ended up matching four out of the first five numbers plus the Powerball number on her ticket.

Normally, the win would have amounted to $50,000. However, because Edwards opted for the Power Play option—an extra $1 that multiplies non-jackpot prizes—her payout tripled to $150,000.

Recalling the moment she found out, Edwards said:

“I’m sitting in a meeting, and I look at my phone and it says, ‘Please collect your lottery winnings.’ And I thought, ‘I think it’s a scam. I know I didn’t win.’”

Why did she give away all the money?

Despite the life-changing sum, Edwards chose not to keep a cent. Instead, she donated $50,000 each to three charities that held deep personal meaning:

  • The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD): Edwards lost her husband to dementia last year, making this cause especially close to her heart.
  • Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society: Provides financial, educational, and emergency aid for active-duty service members and their families.
  • Shalom Farms: A Richmond-based nonprofit focused on building equitable food systems and improving community nutrition.

“I knew I needed to give it all away,” she explained. “I’ve been so blessed, and I want this to be an example of how other people, when they’re blessed, can bless other people.”

Can AI really predict lottery numbers?

Edwards’ story has sparked debate about whether artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT can predict lottery outcomes. The reality:

  • ChatGPT is not a prediction engine. It was designed for language tasks like answering questions, writing, and generating text. When asked for lottery numbers, it simply outputs a set of random digits.
  • AI and gambling: Some machine learning models have been used to detect patterns in games of chance, but lotteries are structured to be mathematically unpredictable.
  • Past experiments: A team of Italian mathematicians once claimed to win $50,000 using an algorithm to spot number clusters, but whether this truly “beat the system” remains disputed.

In other words, Edwards’ win was a stroke of luck, ChatGPT functioned as a random number generator, not as a fortune-telling tool.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first such case. In 2023, a man in Thailand used ChatGPT to select sweepstakes numbers, winning around $59. While the sums differ, the stories highlight how people are experimenting with AI in unexpected ways.

Why does this story matter?

Edwards’ choice to donate her winnings resonates far beyond the novelty of using AI for a lottery ticket. It reflects:

  • A shift in how people use AI: From business productivity to everyday entertainment.
  • Philanthropy in action: Turning personal luck into community benefit.
  • Cultural curiosity: The public’s fascination with whether AI can “beat” systems built on chance.

Her story is a reminder that while technology may surprise us, generosity and human values are what leave the most lasting impact.
