In a significant shift for U.S. currency policy, President Donald Trump has directed the Treasury Department to cease production of new pennies, pointing to manufacturing costs that exceed the coin’s face value.
“For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents. This is so wasteful! I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies,” Trump declared on his Truth Social platform following his attendance at the Super Bowl in New Orleans.
The announcement aligns with the administration’s broader cost-cutting initiatives, including agency restructuring and federal workforce reductions.
